An important note upfront
One limitation of behavioral tracking is that it's not a perfect science. Once in a while, tracking is attributed to a false person because of a set of reason and you can expect it.
This is not a "SalesWings challenge", but a general behavioral tracking challenge which occurs in any system, even Google Analytics. The good news is, while this occurs, it is typically only affecting an extremely small percentage of data.
Website activity tracking is closely dependent on a set of software working together; forms, third party scripts, the website CMS, and more. Historically, in some edge cases, activity was mistakenly attributed to the wrong lead due to shared links, test emails, or user actions.
We’ve now improved our tracking logic to prevent merging of leads who have different email addresses, even in scenarios where such merges could have previously occurred.
🔄 What's Changed: Lead Merging Is Now Disabled for Identified Leads
Previously, if an identified lead (e.g. 1@gmail.com
) visited the website using a link associated with another email (2@gmail.com
)—or submitted a form with a different email—the system could merge the two lead profiles.
✅ New Behavior:
Identified leads will never be merged, even if they interact with:
A tracked URL containing a unique ID linked to another email
A form where they enter a different email than the one already tied to their cookie
Example:
Lead A (
1@gmail.com
) is browsing your siteThey click a link with a unique ID pointing to
2@gmail.com
, or submit a form with2@gmail.com
SalesWings does not merge these two identities
All activity continues to be attributed to
1@gmail.com
, and we ignore the presence of the conflicting ID/email
This enhancement ensures a higher degree of lead data accuracy and prevents identity cross-contamination.
So, why Do Tracking Errors Still Happen Occasionally?
While merging is now disabled for separate identified leads, a few behavioral tracking challenges can still occur—such as internal team actions or unusual use of forms. Here’s how to avoid them:
Avoid Clicking Tracked Links Sent to Lead
You and your team members (hereafter: user), must avoid clicking on tracked URL links that have been sent to leads. If your team members click on tracked links sent to actual leads, the tracking session could still be attributed to the team member—creating misleading activity records.
Best Practices:
Never open or click links in tracked emails sent to leads using your own browser
Avoid bulk emails with tracking when recipients are added manually
Test emails should be reviewed in incognito mode with cleared cookies
Leads Sharing Tracked Links
If a lead shares a tracked link with others (e.g. on social media), the activity will still be tied to the original lead—this is standard behavior in behavioral tracking tools.
While this won’t result in a lead merge anymore, it may still result in inaccurate attribution for that session.
Entering Other People's Emails in Forms
When someone fills out a form with an email that is not theirs (e.g. registering someone else), the system will no longer merge the identity—but the activity will still be logged under the current user’s session.
To Handle This:
Use untracked forms for internal use cases (e.g. registering someone else)
Or contact our support to exclude specific forms from being tracked:

Malicious web forms
If you see leads with a LOT of email addresses attached, likely they come from forms with are poorly coded and create an issue with our cookies.
In this case, please submit a screenshot of the lead, as well as the URL where the forms are located, and we'll look into it.

Improved Lead Integrity
Thanks to our tracking update, separate leads with different email addresses will no longer be merged—even when they visit using another lead’s link or submit another email via form. This change ensures better lead integrity and avoids accidental data blending.
