While a Popup is the what (the content), a Campaign is the who, when, and where. It is the strategic layer that connects your popups to specific visitors and determines the precise conditions under which they will be displayed.

The Campaign Manager provides an intuitive interface to create, configure, and monitor these targeting rules.

Let's look at an example Campaign:

When you create a new campaign, you will be presented with several configuration options to control its behaviour

.

Basic Information

  • Name & Description: Give your campaign a clear, descriptive name and description for internal reference. 💡 Pro-Tip: This is crucial for organization as you create more campaigns.

Engagement & Frequency Controls

These settings control the timing and frequency of your popup to prevent visitor fatigue.

  • Engagement popup: Select the popup design you want this campaign to display from a dropdown list of the popups you've already created.

  • Engagement limit: Set the maximum number of times this specific campaign can be shown to a single visitor.

  • Engagement delay: Set the number of seconds the system should wait after a page loads before displaying the popup.

  • Snooze period: Set the number of days the system must wait before showing the same popup to a visitor who has already seen or closed it.

Priority Level: Which Campaign Shows First?

The priority level is a critical setting that determines which campaign takes precedence when a visitor is eligible for multiple campaigns on the same page.

How the System Chooses Which Campaign to Show

When a visitor is eligible for multiple campaigns, the system follows this 3-step process to decide which one to display:

  1. It checks the priority number. The campaign with the lowest number (e.g., Priority 1) wins.

  2. If there's a tie, it checks the conversion rate. The campaign with the highest historical conversion rate is chosen.

  3. If there's still a tie, it chooses randomly. This ensures fair and unbiased distribution in edge cases.

Targeting Rules: Defining Your Audience and Location

Targeting rules allow you to define precisely where your campaign should be active and which visitor attributes should trigger it.

  • Page Targeting (WHERE): This section allows you to define the conditions for where the campaign is allowed to be shown. You can set rules based on:

    • URL patterns (e.g., URL contains 'pricing')

    • Page Title

    • Referrer URL

  • Visitor Targeting: You can also define conditions based on visitor data, such as Lead Attributes, Event Properties, Tags, and Scores, to target specific segments of your audience.

Pro-Tip: Testing Campaigns Without Disturbing Visitors

You can test a campaign live on your website without showing it to your regular visitors. The best way to do this is by using a specific URL parameter that only you will use during testing.

Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Choose Your Test Parameter: Decide on a unique parameter. For example, you could use ?test_mode=true or a specific UTM tag like ?utm_campaign=internal_test.

  2. Add a Targeting Condition: In your campaign's settings, go to the Page Targeting (WHERE) section and add a new condition:

    • Set the rule to URL contains test_mode=true (or whatever parameter you chose).

    • This condition ensures the campaign will only trigger if that exact text is present in the page's URL.

  3. Test the Campaign: Save and activate your campaign. Now, go to the page on your website where you want the popup to appear and add your parameter to the end of the URL in your browser.

    • It will show for you: https://www.yourwebsite.com/features?test_mode=true

    • It will NOT show for visitors: https://www.yourwebsite.com/features

  4. Go Live: Once you have confirmed the campaign works as expected, you must remove the testing condition from the targeting rules. This will allow the campaign to be shown to your actual website visitors based on the other rules you have set.

Activating and Monitoring a Campaign

  • Activation Toggle: Use the "Activate campaign" switch to turn your campaign on or off. A campaign will only be displayed to visitors if it is active.

  • Preview: Use the preview function to test how your campaign will look and behave on your website before activating it.

  • Performance Statistics: From the main "Manage your campaigns" view, you can monitor the performance of each campaign, including its total Views, Conversions, and Closed events.
