Ever wondered if people are watching videos on your website? If so, which one, and for how long? π½
Watching videos can be a strong buying signal from your prospects (ie. "Prospect X watched your demo video twice, and started watching a customer case study video) and you will want to track and score these events in your SalesWings cockpit.
In this article, we are going to show you how to set up Google Tag Manager to track video activities from Vimeo. If you are hosting your videos on Youtube, head to this article.
Unlike YouTube, Vimeo doesn't have built-in variables in Google Tag Manager. Which means that the process to track video views will include an extra step.
Step 1: Create 2x Vimeo video tracking variables
Go to Variables, scroll down to the User-Defined Variables and click on New.
a) Variable 1 "vimeo_eventLabel"
Select to configure a "Data Layer Variable" and enter "event_label" as the Variable Name. Name it "vimeo_playerTitle" and save.
b) Variable 3 "Vimeo - eventAction" Select to configure a "Data Layer Variable" and enter "event_action" as the Variable Name. Name it "Vimeo - eventAction" and save.
Step 2: Create the triggers
We are now going to create 1 trigger: βVimeo Videoβ.
a) Trigger 1: Vimeo Video
For the βVimeo Videoβ trigger, choose βCustom Eventβ as the trigger tag and add βvimeoβ in the βEvent Nameβ field. This should trigger on some custom events "Event EQUALS vimeo" and "eventAction EQUALS play"
Note: The following event actions are sent from the player and available for tracking:
load
play
progress - 25%
progress - 50%
progress - 75%
progress - 100%
emailcapture
Step 3: Create the SalesWings tags
We are now going to set the tags that will fire to your SalesWings cockpit.
Set up a tag "SalesWings - Custom Event - Vimeo Watched"
If you don't already see "SalesWings Custom Event" in your tag type gallery. Simply look for it by clicking on "Discover more tags types in the Community Template Gallery".
You are now ready to set up the tag as below:
Step 4: Test and Publish
Now, enable the βPreview and debugβ mode in Google Tag Manager and make sure the tag is firing properly. If so, you can publish the Google Tag Manager changes and head to section 3 to set up scoring and tagging in your SalesWings cockpit! π
Step 5: Set up tags and scoring in SalesWings cockpit based on video custom events
Now for the fun part, head to your SalesWings cockpit because it is time to set up tags and scoring based on video activities. π
Here is an example of how you can tag video activities.
Remember to use emojis in tags name to help when filtering tags type.
